Sterling Silver Care Guide

Why are the pieces of jewellery you sell made with Sterling Silver and not Silver?
Silver in its natural state is 99/1000 pure, is very soft and doesn't hold its shape well.
Sterling Silver is 92.5% Silver, while the other 7.5% is an alloy.
Sterling Silver is also known as 925, look for that hallmark on all Sterling Silver.

So, how do I keep Sterling Silver jewellery in tip top condition?
Well, firstly, dropping and treading on Sterling Silver doesn't do it a lot of good.
When you're not wearing your jewellery, try to keep it in a cool, dry place and store each piece of jewellery separately to avoid accidental scratching. To keep your Sterling Silver at its very best, store each piece in its' own airtight container padded with soft materials.
Finally - and this is quite important – try never spray perfumes or other aerosols near your Sterling Silver jewellery as this will discolour it.

Can I wear my Sterling Silver jewellery with confidence whilst bathing, showering, swimming and carrying out day-to-day activities?
Well, if you class shopping, eating chocolate and watching telly as day-to-day activities you should be fine. However, your jewellery shouldn't be worn whilst gardening or carrying out other manual work. Also it’s recommended that Sterling Silver should not be immersed in water. Oh and definitely take your jewellery off if you go Scuba Diving as a) you'd be immersing it in water, b) you might loose it and c) it might be mistaken for lunch by the local wildlife!

Argh! I've got black marks on my Sterling Silver jewellery. What's wrong with it?
As you can't keep our jewellery in airtight containers all the time – you might want to wear it -, chemical reactions can occur. The black marks are simply oxidisation caused by a chemical reaction of that 7.5% of alloy found in your jewellery. The black marks will wear off it you continue wearing your jewellery but you can always give your jewellery a clean.

How do I clean my Sterling Silver jewellery?
The easiest way is to give it a rub with a Silver polishing cloth. Oh and a good clean with an old toothbrush and warm soapy water can do wonders for gemstones.
